Rumble. Rumble.

Rumble. It is the nose the stomach makes to alert someone to their hunger status. It is not triggered by the site of food but merely the instinctual need of the body to replenish its resources. Or is it? These days it is particularly hard to tell if hunger is a need or more of a thought based on the tick tock of the clock. Oh look! It is 8 am – it must be time for breakfast. Oh alas, 12 o’clock – lunch anyone? Dinner is at 7 pm. Sharp and do NOT be late. Is it as easy to predict hunger as it is to set dinner time? The answer is pretty much a resounding “no.”

There is little one can do to plan out their hunger patterns and match it precisely to when they will have time for feeding. It is the rather unfortunate thing about dieting and living life at the same time – the time factor. Cooking takes time, eating takes time, even going through the drive through takes time (although less time if you’re just passing by and happen to swing through when the hot donut signs starts blazing.)

Really think about being hungry and the rumble that spreads like wildfire through that belly of yours. Is being hungry about time or is it a signal to go ahead and eat? When was the last time you were actually hungry so much so that you needed to eat something? More often than not people eat based on the time of the day and not so much the signal from their body to their brains. Let’s go ahead and try to reverse that if possible and avoid the clock.

Rumble. Rumble. Eat with the Rumble not the tick tock.

  1. Valid points. Although it is wise to consider the time at which we consume foods. Although we may not be hungry in the morning, and our hunger pains are not really present in the morning - breakfast still is the most important meal of the day. It give you energy, spiking your metabolism for the day, and also will curb your appetite to over eat during lunch. Consider a rumbling of your stomach at 10pm - should we then eat, because our body tells us so? To add even more complication, its reccomended that we not eat at least an hour before bed; What if i'm hungry (rumble rumble) at 10pm and I go to bed at 10:30pm? In this case, its important to train our bodies to eat when we should eat (and regularly), rather than when we need to eat.

Thanks for the comments RUdude! I agree with you here... It is important to keep a schedule especially when it comes to breakfast. It starts your day off right and research backs the fact that breakfast really is the most important part of the day! That being said, the rumble rumble more refers to the fact that if someone is not hungry then they shouldn't force themselves to eat just because of the time on the clock. Chances are in some time after that tick tock the person will be hungry.

The recommendation of not eating at least an hour before bed usually relates to indigestion issues such as heartburn not so much of a dietary issues. Although, the metabolism does slow during sleep.

Again, everyone should follow what works best for them and can keep them healthy! Truly, that's the best way to define your own diet.
